ice carving secrets: the Cool Brees Project
ice carving secrets: the Cool Brees Project
It’s been quite a while since I updated, but hopefully I’ll be able to do more in the near future. Next week, I go to Fairbanks for the World Ice Art Championships. This time around, I’m not competing, but I’m still carving. I’m working on a larger than life icy Drew Brees sculpture called “Cool Brees.” “Cool Brees” celebrates the Saints first Super Bowl victory and what that victory has meant to the revitalization of New Orleans and the region.
There is a positive energy flowing through New Orleans lately like I’ve never seen! The victory parade for the Saints was attended by an estimated 800,000 people! That’s probably the most people ever at a New Orleans parade, Mardi Gras or otherwise! It was truly an experience and Saints fever has hardly abated since then.
As my contribution to this new positive energy, I’m going to sculpt “Cool Brees,” which will be the first “statue” to commemorate the victory and what may be a truly important moment in the region’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina. A big part of the project is it’s fundraising aspect. The Project will contribute at least $2000 to the Brees Dream Foundation, which dedicates it’s resources to helping children and victims of cancer.
I haven’t even made it to Alaska yet, but I’ve already had a lot of help with this project. I’d like to thank these supporters, which include Zuppardo’s Family Supermarket in Metaire, LA (specifically Peter Zuppardo), Mansurs on the Boulevard and French Market Bistro in Baton Rouge (specifically Justin McDonald), Ice Pro ice sculptures in Parrish, FL, and Ice Alaska (especially Dick Brickley!) There are a couple of other supporters, but they wanted to stay anonymous. Thank you to you as well!
Please check out the website that I’ve set up for the project at www.coolbreesproject.com. Sculpting starts March 3rd!
