ice oddities
As odd as it is to make sculptures out of ice in the first place, it can get quite a bit odder. Stephan Koch of Indiana Ice Studio sent me a link to a story on hundreds of tiny ice men arranged on some stairs, apparently for a photo opportunity. Looking at the photos, I estimated that there were about 250 of them. They appeared to be molded (instead of carved, as the article claimed), as some had identical poses and they were clear on the edges and cloudy in the middle. A Brazilian artist, Nele Azevedo, was deemed responsible for the carnage, as the mini icemen were left defenseless in the bright sunlight to perish!
YouTube provided a couple more examples of ice oddities. The scariest was a video dealing with a treatment for prostate cancer. Hopefully, the treatment is nothing like the carving method. Also, video from Ice Alaska’s ice cannon competition was available, which proves that long, cold winters leave far too much time for coming up with crazy ideas!

This tentacled space alien, mimicking the pose from Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” was one of the odder requests I’ve had for an ice sculpture.
