ice carving secrets: related art: sand sculpture
On February 10, I was able to get some photos of a remarkable sand sculpture at a local mall in Biloxi, Mississippi. It was apparently a 100 ton job and featured five different scenes, three major and two minor. I had only my camera phone, but I was able to get some decent photos of the impressive detail in the sculpture. The sculpture was by Sandsational Sand Sculpting and will be up until March 30. Late last summer, I’d seen another one of their sculptures and will add some photos of that sculpture at a later date. This sequence will mark the beginning of a new section on the photo page: related arts, which I’ll be adding in the near future. Eventually, related rts will include photos of snow, sand, foam, and wood sculpture, and probably some other media as well, as long as it has some sort of relationship to ice carving.

Note the detail, such as the wanted poster and the broken window behind the robbers

A saloon scene was complete with a drunk, a card cheat, and showgirls

Of course, there has to be a bar in the saloon

Next to the saloon scene, a snake oil salesman plies his trade

The angry wife holds a rolling pin as she grabs the ear of her drunk husband

Two more scenes, homesteaders (left) and prospectors, showed a lot of detail, such as in the covered wagons

Naturally, sand was great for portraying some dry desert details
