ice carving secrets: magazine articles: Popular Mechanics and Grace Ormonde Wedding Style
I picked up two magazines yesterday that have articles of interest to ice carvers. The first is the February ’08 issue of Popular Mechanics (p. 64). Steve and Heather Brice get some press in an article about Chena Hot Springs near Fairbanks. There are a couple of photos and the article talks briefly about the Aurora Ice Museum and its unusual refrigeration source (geothermal energy is used; hot water is cleverly converted into cold air).
The other article is the Catering feature (p.142) in the spring/summer 2008 Grace Ormonde Wedding Style. The article focuses on presentation and includes photos of several ice displays, mostly ice bars. Okamoto Studio (New York), So Cool Ice Events (Miami), and iceculture (Ontario) are credited. Wedding Style has regularly included ice presentations and I pick it up when I see it. There have been numerous occasions where a bride or planner will inquire about some sort of ice presentation and they’ll send along a photocopy or a scanned photo. Usually, it turns out that the photo is from Wedding Style. The publication focuses on high end wedding services and features excellent photography. In the past, sculptures by Mark Daukas have appeared as well.
