LED lighting has been showing up in all sorts of applications and it would also seem to be ideal for ice carvings as well. LEDs don’t require much power and provide bright light in a variety of colors. As they become more widespread, the prices seem to be getting better too. Aaron Costic of Elegant Ice Creations suggests using a product from superbrightleds.com (see below for link). It’s a 12” light bar with 18 LEDs that you can easily put underneath a tray using a foam riser like the one pictured at the bottom of this entry (available from Elegant Ice Creations.) The LED light bars cost about $10 plus shipping, so they’re quite economical and can be included in the cost for the sculpture so that you don’t have to go back for your equipment after the event.
I haven’t tried this set up yet, but I’m ordering some of the LED bars for myself and I’ll amend this entry if I need to after I give it a try. Aaron’s never steered me wrong though, so I’m sure it works as well as he says it does.

The site indicates that the lights require a 12V power source and I asked Aaron about this. He said that he simply attached a 9V battery connector to the LED bar and used a 9V battery to power it instead.
